The newly-renovated landmark mill building carries the history of its past while welcoming the diversity of the present. The “Hennessey – McHale Block” today known as The Brooklyn House, was built in 1873 to serve the Irish community as a grocery store. In 1940 it housed the first Armenian newspaper in America and operated for 57 years as the Armenian American Civic Club in pursuit of human rights for its people. Today, The Brooklyn House has a similar mission, bringing community together through art, music, entertainment and events.
The Brooklyn House has been described as welcoming and inviting. From the warm art deco lights that illuminate the outside to the art gallery and coffee shop inside, everything has been created with you in mind. Step inside and experience the multitude of rich and diverse events this historic building offers.
During the morning hours grab your beverage and a quick bite. Take it to go or stay a while enjoying the ambiance of the building or the beautiful private garden area out back. Carve out time to explore the Art Gallery which features the works of local and national artists. Art work is carefully selected by the Brooklyn Arts Association and placed throughout all four floors.
During the afternoon hours you’re apt to find nonprofit meetings, fundraisers, or community programs that support diversity and the arts. The space is available for parties, book signings, workshops, as well as other public and private events. If you are hosting a party, meeting or event, we have a space for you. If you are looking to attend an event, chances are you will find something of interest here.
Live performances and entertainment await you in the evening hours. The space is intimate and warm drawing performing artists from near and far. Settling in with a cup of coffee and light refreshment, listen to the sounds of a favorite musician, or the spoken word of local and visiting poets, artists, and storytellers. Film festivals use our space to screen selected works and we are committed to offering a wide selection of movies and documentaries that will not only entertain but also provoke meaningful thought and discussion. Be sure to visit our calendar and social media pages to stay up to date on everything that’s happening here in the coffee house!
