BLACK WOMEN TAKING OFF THE MASKS by Rose Weaver

Join us for this semi-staged reading of Rose Weaver's Black Women Taking Off The Masks inspired by Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s poem, "We Wear the Mask.”

"Black Women Taking Off the Masks explores my belief that American Black women wrestle with knowing and allowing authentic love, wearing masks when it comes to showing our genuine feelings. Masks in all cultures are used to express a multitude of emotions. All people wear some kind of mask on a daily basis. Though invisible technically, they wear masks at work, home, church, everywhere. Black women struggle daily with identity, self-esteem, self-love, self-acceptance, loneliness, and being misunderstood. Our perceived rejection and abandonment add to an unnamed pain that we carry deep in our hearts, one that has no language.

We wear masks and bite our tongues to make everyone, except ourselves, feel comfortable and happy. In this play, many masks come off. It is funny and it is angry. It is my hope to open dialogue about this neglect so we Black Women can stop singing the blues."
